The 2006 Alabama International Car Show
The Car Show That Put Me In The Hospital
words and media by Steve Wingate, MM publisher
I don't wish to bore you with such details, but it's almost true. When I woke up the morning I was to attend and shoot the 2006 Alabama International Car Show, I felt like I was taking the flu. Not one to be sidelined by such trivial illnesses, I took a few Goody's powders and got ready to leave. On the way to the show, I began to feel a little better as the Goody's started to work on me. The Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center was already unbelievably crowded and and too hot. In any normal state, the weather would be cool and Fall-like in November, but not in Alabama-- oh no, it was in the 80s that day and the BJCC staff had evidently forgotten how to turn the heat off. (It had been in the 40s the week before... also typical of Alabama.) Within 15 minutes of entering the show, I was feeling pretty bad again-- the heat and the people were getting to me, and I was becoming extremely agitated with all the people who blocked my shots. Two days later, I found myself in the hospital (for the first time in my life, I might add) with a fever of 103 and white cell count of 24k due to an epidermal infection. I'm fine now, but this car show will always stay in my memory as the beginning of my "week in hell." The reason I'm telling you this is because I fear my heart may not have been in my work that day. Still, I did manage to capture 18 cars that day, including the new Z06 and several new Chargers.
